THE SPANISH SYNAGOGUE – THE YOUNGEST YET THE MOST BEAUTIFUL
Probably the oldest synagogue in Prague, known as the Old School (Altschul), used to stand on the site of the current synagogue. Because in the second half of the 19th century its capacity was no longer sufficient for the needs of the reformist Jewish community that used it, it was demolished in 1867 and replaced a year later by the Spanish Synagogue, which probably owes its name to the Moorish style in which it is built. This style was used in the Middle Ages in Spain. However, this designation is rather newer, in older sources it is commonly referred to as "Geistgasse-Tempel", or "Temple in Dušní Street". The plans were drawn up by architects Vojtěch Ignác Ullmann and Josef Niklas (interiors). The construction itself was entrusted to the builder Jan Bělský.
